Summary
The cybersecurity staffing shortage of years past has given way to a cybersecurity skills shortage, with CISOs placing the highest priority on hiring security talent with demonstrable skills to meet emerging regulatory requirements or effectively secure emerging tech. People most often acquire and hone these skills through hands-on training via apprenticeships, job shadowing, or labs in cybersecurity skills and training platforms. In contrast, CISOs also consider industry certifications, which people typically earn by studying for and passing a test, an indicator of competence and nearly as desirable as demonstrable skills. This is a snapshot of Forrester’s data on CISOs’ priorities when recruiting new security talent.
